History

Persia (Ancient Iran) as a country has always been one of mankind´s greatest cultural and artistic wellsprings. This highly advanced civilization can be summed up in the words of King Darius, inscribed in stone at Persepolis 2500 years ago. "ALL I HAVE MADE HERE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL I HAVE DONE THROUGH LOVE OF GOD".
And, whenever we fall passionately in love with a beautiful Persian Carpet, we should remember that behind any such superb creative achievement, there must be people with minds, hearts, hands, imagination, poetry - people of genuine nobility.
It is through works of art that Iran expresses her most essential nature, her true contribution to the world and it is with this in mind that Galleri Pialeh has been established - to dedicate itself to Persian arts and handicrafts.
Up until now, we have chosen to exhibit and distribute glass and hand-crafted ceramics exclusively. The gallery presents these products with a blend of elegance, practicality and originality, all flavoured  with History.

We enjoy art because we enjoy comfort. We enjoy art because we love our past - And the past is clearly outside of our control, thus of our responsibility. While such a pursuit of the classic is fashionably advocated by present-day psychoterapists as essential for the well-being of the harried business executive (who sooner or later will be entering a virtual world ), what we aim to do is simply to provide people with a highly sellable range of craft products to propagate joy and positive energy. And , if this homepage helps to stimulate good art as well as good commerce, we shall be able to congratulate ourselves indeed!

Persian glass

Legend ascribes the (accidental) invention of glass to Phoenician sailors. But that would place it at least one thousands years after it was first known in Persia and Mesopotamia (sic).
The Jews learned the art of glass-making whilst in exile in Babylon, which led to its rapid spread the then-known world. Only just recently, a perfect fluted WINE BOWL in glass belonging to the Achamaenid dynasty in Persia (about 2500 years ago) was found by archeologists in Iran. Opaque glass beads, however, are ubiquitous finds in the tombs of Northern Iran and can be dated prior to the Achamaenidic period (Circa 3,200 years ago) whilst, as far back as 400 A:D:, Persian glass was already highly valued in China where the Lapis Lazuli deep-blue was particularly prized, giving both the glass and the colour a shaved chinese name (LULI). It then made its way into Korea and Japan (where it is frequently found in royal tombs). Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century the art of glass-making continued to flourish, but the swift and sudden advance and spread of modern technology that began in the 19th century introduced cheep, factory-made substitute that local craftsmen were unable to compete with and the art sadly went into decline. Then, about 70 years ago, there was an abrupt resurgence of the craft of glass-making in Iran and now, in our day, inspired by glassware produced throughout to the past 3,000 years, Master Glassblowers have reinstated their art by creating modern designs of exceptional beauty and originality. The variety of design and color in our Persian Glassware Collection here at Galleri Pialeh, is ideal both for decorative and functional purposes and will blend equally well with traditional and contemporary interiors.

Persian Ceramics

Persian Ceramics, as we know them first appeared almost 10,000 years ago, the invention of tribal women. By 6,000 B.C. they are widespread throughout the Iranian plateau and in neighbouring Anatolia and Northern Iraq, where techniques already include painting and burnishing (glazing) - The first true ceramics are basically Red in colour with black discolourations caused by oxygen reduction. If low fired, they can be pinkish in colour, if there is plenty of oxygen in the firing, the red tone will be a clear one.
With this Red Technique mastered, painted ceramics emerge with Iran-rich clay for Red, Iron and manganese clay for black and tin-rich clay for white and the Potter`s Art by now has given birth to the first Real Industrial Machine - The Potter`s Wheel.
We first find the Potter`s Wheel in Greece Circa 2,000 B.C. in Troy. But it can already be found in Siyalk (Iran)as far back as 3,500 B.C. ( if not earlier). Pottery from Kerman in Iran is also wheel-thrown.
Galleri Pialeh is proud to present hand made, hand-decorated ceramics from the first and only producer of chinaware in Iran which for over 2 centuries has been engaged in producing ceramics and porcelain painted with the classic Persian motifs.
The porcelain on display at our gallery is of the very highest quality and can be put in the dish-washer, oven and micro-oven without risk.
